USA; Geological Postdoc Fellow 2009 (Scholarship)

The Earth Sciences Division has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to develop conceptual and numerical models to describe the corrosion rate of advanced waste forms used for sequestration of radionuclides and their interaction with engineered and natural barrier systems. The position involves a multicomponent reactive transport treatment of these processes at multiple scales ranging from microscopic to macroscopic.

As a Postdoc, you will:

* Develop new conceptual models and implement them into numerical geochemical modules to describe waste form corrosion, precipitation of secondary phases, and subsequent radionuclide migration.
* Carry out reactive transport simulations at the microscopic continuum scale and relate these to larger (centimeter to meter) continuum scales, with a focus on understanding the mechanisms by which waste forms (glass, ceramics, mineral) corrode and how their corrosion rates are impacted by their local environment.
* Evaluate thermodynamic and kinetic data as needed for geochemical computations.
* Work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
* Author technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Key Success Factors

* Recent Ph.D. in civil engineering, geochemistry, hydrogeology, chemical engineering, geology, or a related field.
* Some knowledge and background in modeling reactive transport modeling.
* Expertise in Fortran 90/95 programming.
* Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, and to author technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
* Familiarity with evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetic databases and data evaluation is desired.

Notes

This is a full-time one year appointment that may be renewed annually based on performance and continued funding.
